The reason for the cut is that if you add that much more steel to the slide you can start impacting the reliability, as the Glock 17 was engineered to operate with a slide weight of X plus or minus margin of error.

I've got a 19 and a 34 and I do well with both but the benefit is that extra sight radius that helps everyone else out. Besides that it is remarkably similar.
