Whenever a friend, relative, neighbor or acquaintance tells me they are buying their first gun, I go out of my way to invite them to my gun club as a guest and orient them on the safe handling of a firearm. I always strongly encourage them to get more training from qualified instructors. However, I don't think such training should be "mandatory" for the purchase of a firearm.
