Pistols are a lot easier to carry around than shotguns.

As to caliber: Have you ever heard of someone volunteering to be shot by a 9mm?
Which takes higher priority? Ease of carry, or surviving a car jacking?

When it comes to the type of thing he's describing, he'd only have a few precious seconds to react.

With a pistol he has to retrieve it, ready it for firing, and place the shots accurately. In a high stress situation like that, his instinctive reaction will be to try and hide or run away while fending off his attacker by blasting wildly with the pistol(which is why there were so many 9mm rounds fired in the scenario he described).

With a sawed off SG, he has to retrieve it, point it in the general direction of his attacker and pull one of the triggers, not much aiming required. Not that difficult to carry it in the car, with the right setup it could be made more accessible than a pistol.

I don't see any reason he can't have both, the SOSG in the car, and the pistol concealed on his person.
