There's a bunch of chemicals from the rounds themselves as well as the rifle and cleaning chemicals to burn off. It's normal.

And yes, right now $300/1000 rounds is probably not unreasonable. 7.62x39 seems to be a little hard to find at the moment- it seems to show up in spurts.
