anyone using or used hornady sst?

last night i picked up the Hornady hanbook of cartridge reloading volume 1 and 2 and like the other handbooks i have I sat down and started reading it in the hopes of figuring out why i dont seem to be getting the performance out of the 180gr sst in my 30-06

I noticed in the book that it shows crimping the cannelure and the SST's apear to have a cannalure although it is narrower that the one on a 30-30 or hornady's interlock.

I have been experimenting with the OAL on my rounds for my rifle but have not been crimping them.

so can anyone tell me if the SST is supposed to be crimped?

I assume if it is supposed to be crimped then figuring out the OAL is no longer an issue since it will be determined by the size of my brass (currently trimmed to 2.484) and the length of the bullet.
