I wouldn't be so hard on Bushmaster or Rock River tbh.
Not all their stuff is mil-spec but mil-spec is hardly the holy grail - it's just the federal government's standard (sometimes). There are plenty of non 'mil-spec' rifles that are great and let's face it, the vast majority of AR owners probably don't run more than 2000 rounds through their rifles before they put them away or sell them.
