Gentlemen,
I thank you kindly for your information and comments. I took the rifle to the gunsmith to assure it's safety (and mine). After fixing a number of minor problems, he has pronounced it fit to shoot and complemented me on the acquisition of a fine old rifle. I even learned that one of the bottom "screws" was in fact the bolt release. I now intend shooting it with the first break in the hot weather in this part of the country. I always wanted a "target .22" and even though I doubt it will be shot in competition, I hope to enjoy it. Thanks again, Quantrill
