I have gotten a bead on a remington spr453 semi auto just recent.

I will need to have the barrel cut down to the 18 (plus extra to be safe) inches for local legal use and all.

It looks pretty good though, 175 bucks, they retail for 369 here new.

It is politically correct enough looking, yet I may get a walnut stock and forend to make it even more "duck hunter" lookin to the untrained eye.

4+1 capacity semi-auto.

What ammunition would be good to test out in this for reliability for home defense?

I keep hearing #1 buck would be best vs 00 buck, as it has more pellets which are smaller and wouldnt penetrate in to neighbors homes as easily, yet also isnt as ineffective as birdshot if the threat happens to move out of distance.
