I went to the auto parts store and picked up a tube of Green Grease for my Mini-14 (very similar to a Garand) and it seems to work just fine. Rated up to 500 degrees, stays put and doesn't dry. Plus I can load it in a grease gun for my car's bushings.
$8 for a big ol' tube.
