Most magnum shotshells fire heavier payloads at a lower velocity, that is the case in this comparison; abeit with fewer but heavier pellets. Winchester's now discontinued 3" 20ga. #3B round fired 24 pellets at 1100 fps also.

Regardless, it is not the number of pellets in the load, it is the number in the pattern core delivered to the vital zone that counts.

I must respectfully disagree with the conclusion stated in your original post.
