H380

Bruce Hodgdon developed a ball powder just for the 22-250, and because 38 gr. of the stuff was the optimum load with 55gr. bullet, he named it H380. I believe he reduced his load to 37 gr. It meters very well thru the powder measure so weighing each charge isn't necessary. Good stuff.

One drawback is that the powder can vary in burning rate quite a bit from lot to lot. I need 39 gr. with most 55 gr. bullets to get about 3550fps with the current lot # I'm using. That's fast enough for me. Some manuals have 36 gr. as the max load. Others, may start at 36 and go to 41gr. for max.! Another caution is that when you get close to maximum, a small powder increase can raise vel. and pressure quite a bit more than it does well below max. Work loads up carefully. If you don't mind weighing and trickling, then IMR4064 is excellent, and 4320 produces high velocities.

For years, I used 36 gr. of H380 and a 55gr. Nos.BT. Good load. When I got a Chronograph, I discovered I'd been shooting at suped up .223 velocities--about 3250 fps. Neither I nor the small critters ever knew the difference. But Chronographs are a whole different subject.
