Shoot 'em both. Find a range that rents guns or a friend with both.
I would rather something I can handle (357) vs. something that drives my hands back into my face (44).
But if you reload you can load lighter 44 special or magnum for practice shooting.....then you only have one caliber to deal with...have fun!
