I can't answer any of the questions in your second-to-last paragraph. I can tell you that as a veteran cop, I have been to plenty of suicides involving everything from .22's through 12 gauges, and on up through .30-06's & 7mm mags. A couple were at conversational distance, when we were trying to talk the guy out of it.

It ain't pretty, and I'm sorry you folks had to witness it. I still don't know why some people feel the need to make their self-appointed exit into eternity into a public spectacle. It is a sad, sad thing.
