The 6.8 doesnt seem to have the reach for hunting that need.
Are you shooting game over 350 yards away? Considering the .30-30 has been America's #1 deer round for over 100 years, with an effective range of 250 yards, I choose the 6.8SPC precisely because it would deliver more power at longer ranges in the AR. The 6.5 will, too.

Those are the #1, and likely, #2 best selling alternative cartridges in the AR, and have the power needed. If shooting regularly beyond 400m, the 6.5G would be the recommended one. However, the fact is most hunters don't, especially in edge woodlands. The sightlines and tactics don't happen.

The AR15 takes a cartridge with 2.300 max overall length. You can juggle the case capacity, case diameter, bullet diameter, and bullet length, but you can't exceed that. If anything, the 6.8 and 6.5 are good examples of the different ways to get there, but the reality is that sighted in, they shoot to the same point of impact, and bullets in a variety of weights are available for both.

In terms of ammo available ready to ship off the internet shelf, them's your choices for the AR in hunting cartridges. Most of the rest haven't cut it to any great degree, or remain vaporware.
