I haven't seen anyone suggest using soft lead. Plain wheel weight alloy should work perfectly fine, assuming proper bullet fit as the others have mentioned. Most any commercial cast bullet would satisfy both these requirements.
On the other hand, if you just don't want to want to use cast bullets then that's perfectly fine.
