I am really digging in the old brain, but I think that in the old Taurus design, there was a spring and plunger in the sideplate that drove the hand, the part that turns the cylinder. S&W once used that idea in conjunction with one of its three hammer block designs, and I think Taurus copied it. But I can't recall if a hammer block was involved in the Taurus design or not.
