I replaced my dead Nikon Monarch with a Leupold VX2, and I most certainly prefer using the VX2 (it's a 6-18). What I did like about the Nikon was the power range of 4-16. All in all, and it's just my opinion, but I'd buy the VX2 over the Nikon any day.
As for a good scope for $300, my Burris FFII in 4.5-14 has been outstanding. I'd buy another one, and I probably will do that soon. When folks talk about a good quality scope for the money, I think Burris. And I've been a Leupold guy for decades, and still prefer that over most others. If I can bring myself to spend the money, instead of the Burris I'd buy a Leupold VX3 4.5-14X40 with the Boone&Crockett BDC lines. I wouldn't worry about the 30mm vs 1 inch tube debate. I'd get the 1 inch.
