IMR 3031 in .45-70. I'm thinking I need a faster powder?

I recently loaded up some .45-70's to shoot in my Marlin 1895G with 45gr of 3031 and a speer 300gr jacketed bullet. I use this powder in an old 336 with very good luck, but I'm thinking I might need something faster for the short 18" barrel. Accuracy was good out to 150 yards, which is the max I could shoot at the range I was at. The problem was that every shot was blowing crud out the barrel ports sideways at other folks on the line. I'm guessing that the 3031 isn't burning fast enough and the aforementioned "crud" is unburnt powder?
