Did you get the screw under the spot where the recoil spring assembly slots into the receiver?
To remove the front lower handguard: field strip the rifle and remove upper handguard/gastube assembly. Under that, toward the front of the lower handguard is a small lever that must be turned through 180deg (point the end toward the muzzle) to remove the lower handguard. After turning the lever, pull the lower handguard toward the muzzle to remove it.
To remove the wood from the upper handguard/gastube: put the square end of the upper handguard/gastube assembly in a vise to prevent it from rotating, grab the wood portion and rotate your hand, the wood will slip right off the gastube.
All the wood removal can be a little difficult the first few times, but it will loosen up eventually.
