The 10/22 is an exelent rifle to learn on, simple, reliable, infinately upgradable.

As to being a good shot, have you thought about training? There is an oganization called Appleseed that can teach you to use that rifle the right way, and give you the skills to, when you are read fr a centerfire, put rounds on target out to 500 yards, with open sights.
