Internet hype. The only common problem I am aware of with the less expensive 870 express is the need to polish the chamber with steel wool. Costs under $10.
Look into the availability of replacement barrels for the pardner and try googling "Pardner Protector Problems". I think in guns you generally get what you pay for.
