Trimming an 870 Magazine Spring?

Brownell's recommends trimming the spring that comes with Remington 870 magazine extension tubes if the spring does not allow the last shell to be loaded into the magazine (i.e. if a +3 tube only allows 2 extra rounds).

What they don't say is which end of the spring to trim--the end against the follower or the end inside the magazine tube. Any thoughts on if one end is better than the other to trim?
