Years ago there was a tutorial on one of these gun boards about polishing slide flats. They used a heavy piece of glass and stuck the sandpaper to it to keep it dead flat. Then they worked from coarse, to medium to whatever and ended up with 1500 grit or 2000 grit, etc.
No wheels, no dremels, flat glass and sandpaper.
