Prohibition fuels crime, it creates a climate in which a black market can thrive. The law abiding citizens won't have guns, but politicians go by some silly notion that criminals obey laws. Once you can't go out to your local gun shop to buy a gun, people will find somewhere to buy guns.

There would be a flood of firearms coming back over the border from mexico because there are people in America that will pay for them and the cartels probably have warehouses of the guns that gangs in america will now pay huge amounts for.

It would result in about 4x the police presence you are used to. and even with those large numbers, good luck finding any of them willing to go door to door confiscating weapons. Expect lots more speeding tickets to pay for this huge increase in law enforcement.

Government is now larger than it was, and spending more money and making less money. Nonetheless would happen if there was prohibition.
