All my rifles now wear expensive glass, but when I started out all I could afford was a Tasco for my .22 & a Bushnell for my 22-250. Both these scopes held zero & neither one ever failed. My Zeiss, Kahles & Leupold scopes are clearer, but not enough to matter, with the main benefits of good quality glass being early morning/late afternoon hunting.
I suppose the only advice I'd give is stay away from their base models & go for something mid-range, like the World Class in Tasco, or the Bushnell Trophy series. You will still be able to get a scope for under $100, but spending $30-$40 on a variable scope is asking for trouble in my opinion.
