Maybe try a deactived round.
Open the crimp, empty the hull of all shot, wads and powder and try that.
The live primer will make some noise, but done correctly it should be safe.
You might want to use ear protection.
Be careful where you aim it, too..
Just a thought.
If that idea isn't agreeable, just dry fire it.
It won't hurt anything.
