Precision40: Per the Standard catalog of S&W the 5906 range should have a serial number prefix TAA or higher. The BAW prefix should be on a revolver.

BAWxxxx should fall in the period January 1988 (AYMxxxx) to July 1988 (BBFxxxx), but the 5906 was introduced in 1989.

Hopefully someone more educated than I will be able to sort your query out.
