For many years my dad was a 308 guy. He shot a Browning BAR and loved it, but it finally got too heavy for him. We kids decided to get him a new and lighter rifle and after much discussion we went with the Ruger Ultralight in 270with a 3X9 scope. His first kill with the new rifle was a coyote. He called, all excited, to tell me about it. He said something like "Son, I tried out the new rifle on a coyote this afternoon, and there were pieces of him all over the palmettos". He loved that gun and caliber from day 1. I also shoot a 270, and for deer hunting I rate the 270 over the 30-06 and the 30-06 over the 308. Sure, the 308 is used in long distance shooting, but that's because it's the military round with tons of long range shooting history on it and not because it's an improvement over the 30-06 (or the 270). They'll all do the job, but I do think the 270 does it a little better.
