Or, it could be both. It happens somewhat regularly when parents divorce and there's a custody dispute. According to FBI statistics kidnappings by relatives account for about half the total number each year, and most of those involve a parent.
The kidnapping example is popular with "interventionists" here, and not without reason. But
you don't know what the situation is... If I saw something like this taking place, it's one of the few cases when I might try to intervene,
but not with deadly force -- I'd hate to make a kid a half-orphan, when it may be a situation that could be resolved in a way that still lets the kid grow up with two living parents...
