Did you ever press charges on your own against your assailant? I guess it would be your word against his as to who started the altercation, but your injuries and the medical records from them would suggest that you "lost" the confrontation. I don't know how your having the pistol, legal though it was, would factor in, but it seems like you should have the right to press charges, even if he called the cops first. But, then I suppose that would assume we live in a world that makes sense....
