Have you considered a 3rd-generation S&W metal-frame 9mm compact?
These were available in both single-stack 7/8rd guise (3913, 3914, 908) or double-stack 10/12rd form (6904, 6906, 6926). All are discontinued and some can be had quite cheap, but I believe that their values have bottomed out, and are now going up.
