I too have looked for the arsenic syrup. The company that made it switched to boric acid or some such.

When we were kids we made photographic flash powder. Like the 1800s era photographers in the movies and silent comedies going up in clouds of smoke. It is also used in firecrackers, cherry bombs, etc. Like braindead0 we would pile it on the hole, blocking the light and path and let them dig it out from the inside. When they broke through we dumped on more. When they had moved a suitable amount we would light off the powder and clean house on the little buggers.

If my memory serves right flash powder is 3 parts aluminum dust (magnesium might be a tad less stable), 2 parts potassium perchlorate (do NOT use chlorate--the other stuff is bad enough) and 1/2 part sulfur. More sulfur for a righteous stench and lung drying fumes.
