While I don't have the XD series, I do carry a Ultra Compact .45 1911 from S.A. and I use to carry it on my hip all the time at the 3 O-Clock position. However, it was always hard to conceal the shape of the pistol when wearing short sleeved shirts and such. So I started carrying it at the 6 O-Clock position in the small of my back. Due to the natural curvature of my back and such, my shirts drape over the pistol making it only noticeable when I bend over and either the shirt lifts up revealing it or pulls tight showing its outline.
