I'm not sure if it's the same spring as a gen 4, but my gen 3 27 has a dual recoil spring. Hope this helps.
As to how many rounds are sufficient to run through a pistol before relying on it for protection, I guess it really is up to the individual & his gun. I had to run 1000 trouble free rounds through my first gun, a Taurus pt111 Mil Pro, before I was comfortable knowing it would be reliable. I would think 200 would be a minimal amount, but I know of some who only shot 50 through theirs and never thought twice about it. I've run about 500 through my 4 Glocks & 2 M&Ps before adding them to the self defense menu.
...By the way, I was given a Hi-point C-9 some 15 years ago & there aren't enough rounds available to shoot that would give me confidence with that gun.
