Problem Installing Older Style Ruger Grips On GP100

Just got a Ruger .357 Mag GP100. Also got some aftermarket grips to put on it that resemble the original/older GP100 grips made of black rubber with the inlay-ed wooden panels on them. However these aftermarket ones have two halves of rubber (originals per a video I saw showed the Ruger rubber to be one piece). Anyhow, the 7/16" pin seems to be slightly bigger then the hole in the tang on the gun. I have gotten the pin into the hole by pounding it in with a hammer, but it is not in all the way (so there are even halves of the pin on either side of the tang). Anyone else ever have this problem? I'd hate to be pounding away at the pin and damage the tang of the gun (that's my main concern). What should I do?

Sincerely,

The Duke
