If I remember my import laws correctly real Sig 550 series could technically be imported to the US, but they would have to be built in a "sporter" configuration that lacks the evil "assualt weapon" features like ability to accept high capacity mags. Once those rifles enter the US, they can be reverted back to their true form using enough US made parts to be 922r compliant.

Sig could also just build an exact copy using their manufacturing plant in the US, but they chose to go for something that looked and functioned similar but was cheaper. I can't really blame them for it, as the costs of the real 550 series as such that they would likely never sell enough commercially to turn a profit, but I can dream.
