It depends on your situation. If you're worried about an ambush then keeping distance between vehicles prevents everyone from being in the kill zone. If your sharing the road with potential enemy vehicles and they might infiltrate your convoy then you want to stay close in order to prevent the enemy from inserting a suicide bomber in your formation and taking out a vehicle or seperating individual vehicles from the rest of the convoy for attack

We've been training to keep close and not have gaps in urban areas but allow space in rural areas.
