If you keep your shots within a 100 yards or so, A deer/bear/hog will not know what length barrel the slug came out of and it will make no difference at all. I have shot my 20" Mossberg 12 ga. at night with 2 3/4" shells.No fire out of the end of the barrel. This indicates to me that all the powder is being burned in 20" of barrel. Once all the powder is burned, extra barrel length does not matter.
