I made sure the handle was all the way back when I took the pic. I removed the piston and it is concave on both ends - I tried the piston in both directions and the primer rod was still sticking up too high, I also pushed down on the rod to make sure it was as far down as it can go. I really appreciate all the suggestions! If I can't figure this out I hope the store will take it back, I'll buy another one.
