Brownells 44-40 blue, but it causes the after-rust problem if you don't take care to neutralize it and get the nitric acid traces truely gone.

Hmm. Not all 44-40 is the same, the liquid is sufamic acid and copper sulfate, the creme contains seleneous acid as well as sulfamic acid and copper sulfate. No nitric acid in sight.
Oxpho Blue contains phosphoric acid, seleneous acid, copper sulfate and nickel sulfate.
There used to be a two-bottle cold blue. The first was just copper sulfate solution which will plate out copper on steel without any electroplating gear.
The second was something that would blacken the copper, I don't know what that was.
Hydrogen embrittlement:
Once upon a time there was a Deputy here going around town with pieces of a nickel plated Colt, I think a Commander, in a bag. FLG suspected hydrogen embrittlement by Bubba's Bumper Shop plating of the barrel, but we never learned for sure.
