Wow. Way past my simple world of BP in a cylinder or use the press for 45LC in a conversion. Modern mfg BP pistols can take a lot, probably as much as Cased guns and I suspect they use the same steel and machinery to make them (the Italian SA Colt Types)
I know one guy that shoots 45ACP + loads in a Colt Open top and no issues.
Ok, I shoot BP quite a bit and I shoot 45 Long Colt (yea its what I grew up with) using a Howel Conversion Cylinder.
Cowboy loads in brass case is really a velocity aspect, all the other stuff aside.
So call it 850 fps.
I have shot BP in the 45 LC cases, not sure why anyone would do that, the 45 LC with Unique (and around the 8 gr mentioned) runs out around 850 fps (barrel length will make some difference)
So why shoot BP in a 45 LC? Get rid of beat up balls. stuff them in, send them downrange at Clay Pigeon, fun, gets the lead into a berm (that they salvage from time to time) and I don't have to drop off at the Haz place!
So yes you can get up over 1000 fps with BP (or BP substitutes). Might have to go with 4F. 777x 3F will do it. Throwing lead balls at higher velocities does not do anything for accuracy I have seen.
So, for BP loads, yep, I target around 850- fps and play above and below that (mostly below).
I wanted to see what my Conversion cylinder would do and get some brass so I bought some so called 45 LC Brass case Cowboy loads (200 gr)
Phew, 1000 FPS. Not what you think of as a Cowboy load. On the other hand I wanted to shoot my 44 Special and the same mfg Cowboy load was right at 850 fps.
And they were using something shiny and sparkly powder wise (opened a couple up) and it was a lot like B eye on steroid (like 3 or 4 grains).
So, lots of recoil can be fun (standing) but accuracy?
Ergo, 850 fps and depends on the gun. 47 Walker higher works as its a long and HEAVY gun. ROA? Not so much. ROA with steel grip frame, better.
You can stuff a .451 ball into a fired 45 LC case if you want. They get messy, need to be cleaned though.
If you want to make real 45 LC loads, then yes you need a press. Small hand one would do. Resize, get the primer out, all that stuff is what a press is about and for.
You can get one of those Lee hammer them in jobs though the cases break after a few passes through one of those. Maybe they have updated with Carbide and better? No idea
You can do all sorts of weird things with paper patched bullets etc, I don't see the point in it.
