Actually, that number is a bit optimistic. As others have mentioned, there's the cost of schooling. Then there's the period of apprenticeship, during which wages are much lower.

Depending on where he sets up shop, a gunsmith may also have to purchase his own machinery and tools. That can eat a couple of years' pay.
