Excellent post FAL. So many of these posters are either too young or have gotten too old and their memory is gone. I remember first hand the race riots in New Jersey growing up. I remember the long gas lines in the 70's. People talk about 4% mortgage interest rates, and they have no idea that in the late 70's, mortgage rates were DOUBLE DIGITS!!! 11%. They don't realize we had 9% unemployment in the mid 70's and double digit unemployment in the mid-80's.

So many people have absolutely no idea how economics and the economy works. They don't understand it's cyclical. The truth behind all this is: "There's a lot of paranoid people out there".

Do I believe in having a gun for self defense? Yes. I was there for the race riots. But as mentioned, you don't need an AR. A revolver or other handgun will work for that. Your favorite 30-30 hunting rifle will work. Unfortunately, there's too many who believe that "Red-Dawn" is a real possibility. They don't realize that "Die-Hard" is just a movie. They take a scenario like Katrina, and make it sound like it's some unique scenario. Like it never happened before. And of course, they conveniently leave out the part where the new orleans and state police confiscated many privately owned weapons. So the individuals didn't have a weapon to protect themselves in many circumstances anyway. Yes; "AFTER THE FACT"; the courts said that was illegal. But you can't tell the police that you're going to take them to court during an emergency. That's all after the fact. If the local authorities call up martial law, you may not have the protection you think you have. "That's one reason I believe in having at least 1 or 2 unregistered guns. In case the others are accounted for and taken". Then again; not everyone lives in a free state like I do.

Point is; Katrina and such are not as much a real scenario for protecting yourself, as is that many are simply paranoid. And the person with their AR and 30-40 magazines filled is definitely paranoid. The AR is fine for home defense if that's what you want to use. So is your shotgun, revolver, or semi-auto pistol. Along with your Marlin lever action 30-30. And when some start debating the merits of one weapon over the other for home defense; and start talking mega-magazines for the "SHTF" (Katrina type scenarios); I realize how little some people know of the real world. It's a combination of "Funny as hell" and "Such a sad shame". If you're under 35 years old; sorry, but there is absolutely nothing new going on. Stop panicking. If you're over 60 years old, then remember to take your meds. Your Alzheimer is kicking in. If you're between 35-60, you should definitely know better. Stop being so damn paranoid.
