Sounds like a WWI Model of 1917 US. Enfield Rifle, made by winchester, (others were Remington & Eddystone)
The front ring of the actionm where front of bolt disappears, try laying piece of paper ther and rubbing the side of the point of a lead pencil. And see if there any marking that show-up.
Look at the bolt handle for markings "W" ,"E", "R" or "USMC".
Anything also that looks like an "eagle head"?
