Chronographing BP guns

I have Chronographed BP guns in the past and have not liked the results.
I would like to know if anyone here has experienced problems and found solutions.
Do patches mess up muzzle velocity results?
Dose the smoke cloud interfere with results?
How close is too close, How far away can one be before it isn't considered muzzle velocity?

A friend machined a .400 mold for Minie's and we are planning some tests on this bullet.
For the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, But to us who are being saved, It Is The Power Of God. 1Corinthians 1-18
