5.56/.223

I know all about the differences between the 2 cartridges, and why you shouldn't shoot 5.56 rounds in a weopon chambered for .223.

What I don't get is how ammo and weopons are advertised. I know many people consider them the same. (They aren't) I see adds for .223 ammo and the box in the picture has 5.56 on the side! ???

Do they just say ".223" so people don't get confused? How many rifles chambered in ".223" can actually safely chamber 5.56, but you wouldn't know it? If the same logic applied as in the ammo.

If you look through guns catalouges, there are weopons displayed in both chamberings, though more in .223. I guess I would prefer one chambered in 5.56 so I could have the option of using surplus ammo. I guess the difference would be in the rifling used to facilitate heaver/lighter bullets for competition purposes.

Why do they substitute or misrepresent this caliber, or do they?
