"Works great on an octagon barrel." True. On a round barrel, you just take one stroke, move the file around a bit, take another, and so on. Keep the strokes light and go around the barrel until it is all smooth. Then finish off with the sandpaper (emery cloth is better as it stays together longer) using the "shoeshine" motion.
