Ocassionally, one will see old Mauser barrels advertised in Shotgun News (sarco, etc) ........like 25 for a "good" one and 40 for one that's "like new"....Is this a good starting place for a guy to learn about re-barreling/headspacing or what???

Kye-oat, they'll work for that. I recommend you get a couple of books on the subject. Gunsmithing by Roy Dunlap and The Complete Illustrated Guide to Precision Barrel Fitting by John L. Hinnant. George

I just chambered a Mauser today.
The best book about working on masuers I have found is by Walsh. I got it at Brownell's.

I made an action wrench and a barrel vice. This must be a labor of love, becuse you can just buy a Remington or Savage new and be done with it.
