View Full Version : Northern Virginia FU-UN Shoot!

Mike Irwin
June 26, 2001, 12:50 AM
The thread on purchasing a new gun on July 9 got me to thinking...

What better way to celebrate the purchase of a new gun, and say F.O.A.D to the UN than by meeting at the NRA range to shoot?

Anyone up for it?

I just posted the event on the calendar.

Come on, Northern Virginians!

June 26, 2001, 12:57 PM

May be here or in South Carolina on 9 July. If I am here, I will attend.

Best regards -- Roy

Sounds like fun. I'll try to reschedule two doctor's appointments.

Mike Irwin
June 26, 2001, 05:13 PM

Bring your Doctors along!

We can make them try to explain the new AMA policies. :)

June 26, 2001, 06:19 PM
Hmmm. I'll try to clear my schedule. What time were you thinking about going?

PS, Anyone headed out to the show in Front Royal this weekend?

June 26, 2001, 06:48 PM
Since I live in MD and plan on buying a handgun that day, I won't be able to bring a new one. I asume an old one will work just as well. What time?

For time how about 7:30 p.m.?

Thanks for reminding me about the L&L forum, and sorry about posting it here. I normally don't visit L&L, so it wasn't on my mind.

Could a moderator move this thread, please?

Sounds like fun, I'll pencil it in. Thx, M2

Sweet idea! Reminds me of the 50 Million Round March counter to the Missing Moms. I'm going to have a hard time making it (Mr. Irwin understands), but will if I can. Please, fellow TFLers, let's pack the NRA range on the 9th and say FOADSAP* to the U.N. Those parasites must be stopped right here and now.

Hope to be there. The wife and I recently purchased our first home over in Penderbrook, less then a mile from the NRA Range. If I make it, I'll be wearing a white "Dive Rite" t-shirt.

Mike Irwin
June 27, 2001, 12:28 PM
Very very good, people!

Hey Mr. James, maybe you should bring Thomas along?

How well would that wash? :D

Mr. James
June 27, 2001, 12:37 PM
OK, everyone sing along with me now, "Our day will co-o-o-me" :D

June 27, 2001, 12:58 PM
does the NRA range allow Kofi Annon targets?

Mal H
June 27, 2001, 01:35 PM
Sounds very cool! I'll try to make it if at all possible. If everyone from the area comes, we're obviously going to have to share lanes which is fine with me. Oh and I'll be the one wearing the Molon Labe shirt. ;)

Now, what to bring, what to bring ....

Mike Irwin
June 27, 2001, 01:50 PM
Hey Mal,

I think EVERYONE will be wearing Molon Labe t-shirts!

I know. That's why I added the " ;) ".

Mike Irwin
June 27, 2001, 01:59 PM
OK, folks, it's official!

7:30 p.m. at the NRA Range in Fairfax!

I've been trying to call the NRA Range all stinking day to make absolutely certain that they are going to be open on July 9, but no one is picking up the phone.

I'll post more information when I can get them on the phone.

Mal H
June 27, 2001, 02:14 PM
Mike, they used to close at 5:00 PM on Mondays, has that changed? I haven't been to The Range in about 7 months.

Maybe you can speak to Ed Wages or whoever is in charge these days get 5 or 6 lanes reserved.

A note to those who haven't been to the NRA Range before:
You will have to take a short safety exam before being allowed to shoot there no matter how experienced you are (they don't know your level of ex.) It is practically impossible to fail it, so don't worry about it. However, if you do fail it, you will be blackballed from TFL and will have to turn in your Molon Labe shirts and hats. :)

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's NOT official!

The Metropolitan Pistol League is meeting on Mondays from 5 to 8, after which the range closes!

OK, folks the range is also closed on Tuesday.

Anyone want to try for Sunday July 8?

Mal, thanks for the heads up. I had forgotten about that, and was only just now able to get a warm body to answer the phone at the range.

June 27, 2001, 03:00 PM
Doh! July 8th is my anniversary. Have fun y'all!

June 27, 2001, 03:25 PM
in the imortal words of the Moody Blues...

Tuesday afternoon?

I maybe able to show up, but due to my homestate of MD and my work State of DC, i am dang near legally & logistically incapable of bringing along a firearm

unless i take a work mental health day...

Mike Irwin
June 27, 2001, 04:59 PM

The NRA Range is normally closed almost all of Tuesday, as that's the day that they do IDPA, IPSC, etc.

Hi guys,

I'm a total newbie and I don't own a firearm (well I do, but I don't think an antique shotgun with twin 30-inch barrels is the best gun for a beginner), but I'd like to learn. If you are still planning to meet locally, I would love to come out, even just to watch.

July 9th is my last day of work (dot-com layoff) so anytime after then I'm free. :) I could buy a gun on that day, but I really need to save my money (BladeForums members, this is your cue to laugh), and I'd like to get some actual shooting experience first. Rest assured, I am not a "disgruntled former employee", just someone interested in guns and self-defense. :D If anyone can recommend local ranges that offer training with loaner guns, I would appreciate it.

June 29, 2001, 10:33 AM
David, welcome aboard. I'd say go visit the folks down at Gilbert Small Arms Range (703-550-8005). Take I-95 south to Exit No. 166A. I hope the exit number is still correct with all the construction going on down there. You'll find them in back of an industrial park across the road from some white fuel storage tanks. Real friendly service and a nice selection of rental guns. Hope this helps.

Do we want to shoot for Wed., Thur. or Fri. of the same week? The Range is open 'til 10 PM on those days and I don't think they will be having a CCW class that week.

David Park - you are very welcome to join us once we get a date nailed down. I'm sure there will be several different types of handguns/rifles you can try out.

Mike Irwin
June 29, 2001, 09:06 PM
OK, how about Friday the 13th?

Thursdays are out for me, and Wednesday isn't looking good, either.

David Park

Roadrunner, I actually tried to find Gilberts once after I ran across their web site (http://www.gilbertrange.baweb.com/). I didn't see a sign or anything, so I thought they might have moved. I'll plan to find them again this weekend. I actually live south of Alexandria on Rt. 1, so they are very convenient to reach by the Fairfax Co. Parkway.

I'm assuming the NRA range is at the big NRA building off 66? :o If you guys pick a date, I'll try to be there. I'll probably be wearing my INNOCENT BYSTANDER T-shirt. :D Thanks for the welcome.

edit: OK, I found the NRA HQ range (http://www.nrahq.org/shooting/shootingrange/range.asp) web site, so now I know how to get there.

So, are we shooting for Friday the 13th, so to speak?

Everyone who can make it should post an "aye" here.

Yes, Friday the 13th, 7:30 p.m.

I'm going to private message everyone who has responded to this thread.

I stopped by Gilberts today (nice place, don't know how I missed it before) and signed up for their firearm basics class. Hopefully I'll be able to get in on standby before the 13th, so that I'll have at least a little experience. I'm really looking forward to it!

What about a weekend????????? I would try and make down there if you did it on a weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike Irwin
July 1, 2001, 08:24 PM
Jesus, I said in an earlier message, "How about Sunday?"

You could have measured the response to that while asleep! There was none.

Friday the 13th, 7:30 p.m.

That's my final answer, and if Regis asks me again, I'm going to kneecap him. :)

How about Saturday?

Mike Irwin
July 1, 2001, 09:21 PM
How about Friday the 13th? That seems to be the going concensus right now, and if it's Saturday, the guy who called this thing in the first place (me) can't be there because I've now got plans for Saturday.

Jamie Young
July 1, 2001, 09:54 PM
How about Sunday then? Does the guy that has plans on saturday, that wants the shoot on Friday the 13th,have plans for Sunday? How about the following Sunday? Or does the guy that has plans on saturday have plans for the following saturday?

Mike Irwin
July 2, 2001, 01:49 AM
Friday the 13th, Soda.

And yes, I have standing plans for just about every Sunday for the rest of the summer.

July 2, 2001, 09:54 AM
Another vote for 7/13.

July 2, 2001, 09:13 PM
Well I guess I can't make it then ;) I'm gonna have a shoot in early Sept here in Pa and your all welcome to drive up. We've had plenty of guys from NJ and New York drive 3hrs to all of our TFL shoots. We have a great place to shoot!!!

Good Luck

Mal H
July 2, 2001, 10:48 PM
SodaPop - Where in PA do you live and approx. what time can you get away? For reference, I can make it to Kutztown in under 3 hours, from Philly in about 2.5 hours. You don't have to arrive exactly at 7:30 don't forget. Of course the drive back might be tiresome, but that would be true any day of the week.

David Park's post on his experience at Gilbert's gave me an idea that if he or anyone attending would like to try out a particular caliber handgun (or rifle for that matter), they should let us know here. Between all the attendees ( I trust there will be several), we should be able to come up with an example of just about every caliber known to the Western world. Heck I'll even bring my 15 watt laser if you really want to drill some holes in the backstop! (Not really, the NRA would never let us back.)

Mike Irwin
July 3, 2001, 10:40 AM
Good thought, Mal.

I've gotten two e-mail queries on this from people who haven't posted to the thread.

One was from a person who appears to be a relative newbie. I encouraged him to come out, and told him that he's more than welcome to try any of my guns.

So far, I'm thinking of bringing the following...

.22 Browning Buckmark

.38 Spl. S&W 042

.357 Mag. Model 19 or 28, 4"

.41 Mag. Model 58 4"

.45 ACP Model 1917 5.5"

.45 ACP Model 1911A1

9mm Kahr K9

I may bring a couple of others, as the mood strikes me, and I MAY bring the Marlin Camp Carbine I was talking about over on rifles. I've had it for a couple of years, and haven't shot it yet.

And crap, I need to get ammo!

David Park
July 3, 2001, 12:42 PM
That looks like a good selection Mike! I mainly want to try a .45 and 9mm semi-auto, since we handled those in the class but didn't shoot them. I'm also interested in compact "backup" guns (like the Kahr K9 I guess).

Since I'm not bringing any guns, I'm willing to provide ammo (but not for everyone  ). Someone will have to let me know what and how much to purchase.

Mike Irwin
July 3, 2001, 12:54 PM

You won't go wrong if you show up with some hardball 9mm or .45 ACP.

I suggest Gallyans Sporting Goods in Fairlakes. They seem to have decent prices on ammo.

That's where I'm going to head to pick some up.

I'm also going to do some loading this weekend.

Mike Irwin
July 3, 2001, 12:55 PM
Oh hell, how could I forget my new 10mm Witness?

I've only got 50 rounds of ammo for it, though...

Mal H
July 3, 2001, 07:17 PM
I'll bring a couple or 4 .45's as well:
Colt's Combat Commander
CZ 97B
Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt
Win '94 in .45 Colt

And a 9mm - Sig P239

I'll also bring:
Ruger Super Redhawk .44 Mag.
5.5" Ruger Mk II

I live in Delaware County just outside of Philadelphia. What exactly is the NRA range like? If you can get to Kutztown in under 3hrs you have ZERO excuses for not coming to our PA shoots Mal H!!!!!!!! Our shoots have been in Philadelphia and near Quakertown. You have to come out in Sept to the place we've been going the last two times. 50yd pistol and 500yd rifle range. Absolutely great place to hang with fellow TFL members. Somebody give me more info on where this NRA range is so I can look it up on a map?

Mal H
July 3, 2001, 09:09 PM
I might try to make the PA shoot in Sept.

As for the range, it is essentially at the intersection of I66 and US 50 in Fairfax, VA. Their web site has explicit driving directions: http://www.nrahq.org/shooting/shootingrange/range.asp

If you come down I95, you should take the I495 exit (Wash. Beltway west) instead of continuing east on I95.

David Park
July 3, 2001, 09:09 PM
Soda, I posted a link to the NRA range home page near the top of page 2 of this thread. It's a 12-position, 50-yard range and sounds pretty nice.

Mike, thanks for the ammo advice.

Jamie Young
July 3, 2001, 09:56 PM
Ack its a little too risky for me to drive down there on a friday night if the place closes at 10pm. I can't leave here until after 6pm and it looks like a minimum of 2hrs if I don't hit a lot of traffic. I don't want to speed down there especially if I'm carrying out of state firearms. How about Saturday? ;)

Well Mal H I hope you can. I think Its going to be the weekend after Labor Day in Sept. I think the 8th or 9th. I'll post a date in a month or so. I have 17 Members from TFL, 1911Forum and FNFAL.com that have come to our shoots and we have yet to bring a Moderator. ArmySon was going to come to our first one but ended up going over seas for family stuff.

Friday the 13th works for me, looking forward to putting some faces with names. I'll likely bring a SIG 225, Kimber .45 (w/new fiber optic front sight), and maybe the Tomcat could use some exercise. See y'all there. M2
