Is anyone familiar with John Farnam?

He's teaching a defensive handgun course here in Utah in July. I'm planning on going, but haven't shelled out the bucks yet. His Utah based contact (and, I presume, co-instructor) has impressive credentials.

Can anyone give me some first or second hand info on him? How good is his course?

You won't find better. He's probably in the top three and you don't want to miss the opportunity to train with him.

One instructor (now teaching at SigArms Academy) I know and respect told me that John Farnam is an intense and dynamic instructor who doesn't stop. When you get to the range, you will stay there and drill, and drill and drill. Bring food & drink (and water to wash your hands & face with before you eat or drink).

DENNIS B. TUELLER: A 25-year veteran (Lieutenant, retired) of the Salt Lake City, Utah Police Department where he made significant contributions to firearms policy and training. He was a Senior Staff Instructor at "Orange" GUNSITE, and is currently a member of the Guest Staff at THUNDER RANCH. Also a former member of Board of Directors of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors, he has been a frequent presenter at IALEFI Training Conferences in the United States and Europe.


He lives here in Utah.

The Tueller Drill was developed by Dennis Tueller. He is an excellent instructor. I had the good fortune of attending a two-day class he tuaght.

John and his wife Vicki who helps him teach most of his classes are one of the premier class acts in firearms training. Much of what we teach at The Firearms Academy of Seattle has been influenced by his teachings. One unique thing about John is that he isn't stuck in dogma from the 70'a and 80's. He is quick to grasp new concepts that he feels if valid and run with them or refine them.

Very highly recommended! I have taken several of John's
courses over the years, most all of which involved
Dennis Tueller's participation as co-instructor.
The course will be held at the F.A.R.M. facility not
far from Cedar Fort, a well-equipped range.
The most recent course I took from him (Sept 1999),
he used a rotating metal target that was useful in
establishing trigger control, aiming, and
timing (ie, when to shoot).
For one particular drill, he might have everyone
put their weapons on a table, loaded, with extra mag
or speed-loader, then when your turn to shoot comes up,
will point to a weapon which you are to use in the drill.
Take (and use) sunscreen.
Take lots of ammo, and a backup handgun.
Eye & hearing protection are mandatory.
That weekend was already pre-committed,
or I would have already been enrolled in the course.
